ATHETOID CEREBRAL PALSY

Athetoid cerebral palsy talks about neurological disorders which tend to affect a child before or right after the birth. It tends to affect the movement of body in a permanent manner but it doesn’t get worse with passage of time. It is caused as a result of abnormalities in certain sections of the brain controlling movement of the muscle.

At times it is also referred to as dyskinetic and the symptoms tend to show up even before the child reaches the age of one. This type of athetoid cerebral palsy tends to affect around 10 to 20 % of all patients with cerebral palsy. It tends to take place when the cerebellum or the basal ganglia gets damaged. Children suffering from athetoid cerebral palsy can be treated by helping them to relocate their center of gravity. One needs to start physical training as early as possible helping the child to learn to control their muscles and preventing the muscles from becoming weak.

Athetoid cerebral palsy tends to affect around 10% of children diagnosed this type of cerebral palsy. To date there is no cure for athetoid cerebral palsy but still hospitals tend to provide multidisciplinary medical assistance. Athetoid cerebral palsy should not be taken lightly. There are extreme chances that it can affect cervical spine which can be a cause of permanent disability.
